How to use candles safely

Approximately one in four fires starts with an open flame. Follow this checklist and avoid the most common mistakes when using candles.

Steer clear of flammable decorations

Candles and flammable materials are a dangerous combination. Moss, driftwood, twigs, pine cones, string and other dry natural materials catch fire quickly and burn well. Therefore, never make decorations where such materials are placed near candles. If you are decorating a table, feel free to put the candle in a separate glass or in a lantern with good ventilation. Then the light stands steady and does not easily come into contact with flammable materials. Stone, glass or ceramic can be a good alternative to flammable decorations close to candlelight.

Replace candles with LED candles

There are many nice LED candles that can be a good and safer replacement for candles, for example near flammable decorations or if you have children or animals in the house that can knock over a candle. Check that you are using LED bulbs with the correct socket and voltage for the equipment.

Choose a fireproof underlay

If you are going to make candlesticks and decorations yourself, make sure that the candle stands firmly and on materials that cannot catch fire. Fireproof materials can be, for example, metal, porcelain, sand or stone. Never place lit candles directly on the tablecloth, on wooden boards or anything else that starts to burn.

Keep your distance

If you are going to light several candles, make sure they are not too close together. A distance of around 10 centimeters is enough so that the candles do not melt each other. This also applies to tealights. If you light several tealights next to each other, the candle wax or wax in the candles can become too hot, so that the candle starts to run strongly or can flare up.

Lanterns, glasses and figures that are to house lit candles must also have good ventilation at the top. Otherwise, the candle wax may become too hot and catch fire.

Do not leave candles unattended

Candles can burn down faster than you think due to draughts or faults with the candle. Candle holders can also crack and the candle fall down, small children or animals can tear down tablecloths or in other ways knock over or tear down candles A fire quickly gets out of control. Therefore, make sure to be present in rooms where there are lit candles.
