How to extinguish a deep fryer fire

A pot of boiling oil that burns is very difficult to extinguish. Water, which is usually used to extinguish fires, should definitely not be used. But what should you do?

Always keep a lid nearby

Never leave a pot of hot lard or a deep fryer left on. If it catches fire, you only have a couple of minutes to extinguish the fire. That's why it's a good idea to always have a lid nearby when deep-frying food.

If you discover the fire right away, you can put on a lid to smother the flames. Also be aware that hot oil may self-ignite after extinguishing.

If the fire is ignited, it will be difficult and dangerous to access with a lid. A few minutes after ignition, the oil can also boil over, so that the fire spreads over the furniture and floor.

Use a special extinguisher

There are special hand extinguishers that are specially developed to extinguish fires in the deep fryer. Tests have shown that these effectively extinguish and cool down deep-fry fires, where other ordinary extinguishers are not suitable. If you use a lot of frying, it may be a good idea to have such a special appliance available in the kitchen. You can buy these at hardware stores and DIY stores.

Do not use water

Water and deep frying do not belong together. If you try to extinguish burning oil with water, you will get an explosive fire. Therefore, never use water to extinguish a deep fryer.

Fire extinguishers can spread the fire

Tests show that ordinary hand extinguishers with foam, powder and CO2 have a poor extinguishing effect on fires in vegetable oils. In addition, the pressure in such extinguishers, especially powder extinguishers, can be so great that the burning oil spreads outside the boiler. Thus, the fire is increasing in scope.
