How to avoid a chimney fire

If you burn damp wood, pitch soot will form in the chimney. This can cause a chimney fire. Here are some tips for the right fire.

Ensure good ventilation

Good combustion requires a lot of air. Keep all the draught vents open when lighting the fireplace. When there is good heat in the oven, you can turn down the draught until it is burning with calm flames.

Not too much or damp wood

If you fill the stove with wood and fire with little draft, pitch soot will form in the chimney. The same happens if you burn damp wood. Bexot and tar that accumulate in the chimney eventually catch fire. It can happen after just a few months of incorrect firing.

Check the instruction manual or contact the supplier if you are wondering how your fireplace works.

Keep the chimney in order

It is your responsibility to ensure that chimneys and fireplaces are kept in order. Look for cracks and signs that the chimney may be broken. If you are unsure, contact the fire and chimney sweeping service in the municipality where you live.

When will the chimney sweep arrive?

If you pay a chimney sweeping fee to the municipality where you live, you are entitled to have your chimney swept as needed. The chimney sweep must also come to your home and check chimneys and fireplaces if necessary. Contact your municipality if you have questions about chimney sweeping fees/fees or if you are wondering when the chimney sweep will arrive.
