Fireproof at camping

A fire at the campsite can spread quickly. If you have a smoke detector, you will be notified early if an accident occurs. With a fire extinguisher and a fire blanket, the chance increases that you will be able to extinguish the fire early, whether it is burning in your own or your neighbor's home.

Keep at least 4 meters distance

At campsites, there should be at least 4 meters distance between caravans, motorhomes and tents.

A distance of 4 meters is not enough to prevent a fire from spreading further. The purpose of the distance is to limit the spread of the fire, so that people close to the fire have time to escape and possibly contribute to the extinguishing work. If there are strong winds or vegetation that increase the risk of spreading, you should increase the distance.

For terraces, "nail tents" and other more fixed structures, provisions from the Planning and Building Act may apply. This must be described in the campsite's rules.

Install a smoke detector

In the event of a fire, every second counts. If you have a smoke detector, you increase the chance of getting out in time. Smoke detectors should be installed permanently in caravans and motorhomes. Remember to change the battery and test that the smoke detector works before you set out on a trip. In tents, you can use a travel smoke detector. It's a good idea to have a knife close at hand in the tent so you can quickly cut yourself out if a fire starts.

Remember a fire extinguisher

There must be a fire extinguisher in all caravans and motorhomes. Make sure that the appliance is easily accessible and regularly maintained, so that it is always ready for use in the event of an accident. A fire blanket is a nice addition that takes up little space and effectively smothers smaller flames.

Beware of the grill

Many people put the grill too close to the caravan, motorhome or tent. Remember that the grill gets very hot and can set fire to both walls, tent fabric and the groundsheet.

Keep grills and appliances outdoors

Never use open flames or glowing coals inside the tent or awning. A tent fabric catches fire quickly and can emit many toxic gases. Grills, cooking appliances and the like should be at least 1 meter from the tent fabric – on the outside of the tent. If you light barbecues and gas appliances inside the tent, you not only risk the tent catching fire, but also that the air in the tent becomes so bad that there is a risk of suffocation.

Check the electrical system

Electrical systems and incorrect use of electrical products are the cause of many fires annually. Electrical systems and electrical equipment in caravans and motorhomes must be installed in accordance with the regulations. It is your responsibility to ensure that facilities and equipment are used as intended. It is a good idea to get a professional to do a qualified check, inspection and maintenance of the electrical on board, before the holiday trip starts. Also read carefully the campsite's rules for connecting and using electricity.
