All homes and holiday homes in Norway must have at least one smoke detector on each floor. You should test the whistleblower regularly, and preferably monthly. You should replace one-year batteries every year.
Test the smoke detector by holding down the "test button" for a few seconds. The smoke detector should then start beeping. If it doesn't, you need to replace the battery and test again, or buy a new alarm.
Replace the battery
If you have a smoke detector with a one-year battery, you should change the battery at least once a year. Make it a rule of thumb to change the battery on 1 December, which is Smoke Alarm Day.
If the smoke detector emits short beeps, it means that the battery is starting to go bad. Then you need to replace the battery right away. After replacing the battery, check that it works by pressing the test button. If the smoke detector has a new battery and does not respond, the battery is defective and you must replace it immediately.
Lifetime of smoke detectors
A smoke detector should normally be replaced after eight to ten years, but in rooms with a lot of dust and dirt, the detector can become unstable and give false alarms because the sensor becomes dirty or dusty. In such environments, the smoke detector will have a shorter lifespan.
