What the CE mark means

The CE mark is proof that the product meets basic safety requirements. The brand says nothing about the quality of the product.

What does the CE mark mean?

A CE marked product must not be harmful to human safety and health or to the environment.

What should be CE marked?

Products that must be CE marked include electrical household appliances and personal protective equipment such as bicycle helmets and other protective helmets. Toys and costumes for children must also be CE marked.

Infant and toddler equipment such as prams, pacifiers, stair gates and high chairs do not require CE marking. Nor is there a requirement for CE marking of furniture and textiles. Costumes for children are an exception, because they are defined as toys.

How are CE marked products inspected?

There are many different products that are CE marked, so there are also different authorities that are responsible for checking the product. Often, the authorities visit places where the products are sold. If the authorities find products that are not labelled, labelled incorrectly or that are labelled but do not meet the safety requirements, they demand that the products be withdrawn from the market.
