How to choose the right sunglasses

Sunglasses are divided into different categories according to how bright light they protect against. Some sunglasses have such a strong filter that they should not be worn while driving. Here's the overview to help you choose the right pair of glasses.

Choose the right category

Design and fit may be important when choosing sunglasses, but more importantly, the sunglasses protect your eyes from harmful rays. This requires the sunglasses to have a sun filter. The strength of the filter determines how strong the sun it protects against and determines which category the glasses fall into:

  • Category 0 is for cloudy weather.
  • Category 1 is too partly cloudy.
  • Category 2 is for normal sun.
  • Category 3 is for strong sun.

Category 4 is for high mountains and by the sea. Sunglasses with category 4 protection are not suitable if you are going to drive.

Requirements for sunglasses

  • All sunglasses sold must include information about the protection category of the glasses and how strong the light they protect against.
  • Sunglasses must be CE marked and information about who the manufacturer is must be included.
  • If the sunglasses can be damaged by cleaning products, care information must be included in Norwegian where this is explained.
