Growing pets are not suitable for young children

Growing pets are toys that ooze out when they get damp or put in water. If small children ingest pieces of these, it can be fatal in the worst case.

These are growing pets

Growing pets come in different varieties, but typically it is a plastic egg that can easily break. Inside the egg there are various figures, such as snakes, dinosaurs or penguins. They are sold in many places - both in physical stores, in online stores and at trade fairs. The figures inside the egg are made of a material that grows more than twice as large when placed in water.

Risk of suffocation

The danger of growing pets is that small children can eat on them or swallow pieces of the figures. As the bites grow, they can block the airways or intestines of young children. This can cause major injuries, and in the worst case, be fatal.

Not for young children

Due to the dangers of the product, most growing pets are marked with a warning that they are not suitable for children under three years of age. Parents and other adults must respect this age rating and take good care that young children do not get hold of these toys, for example from older siblings or other children.

In addition to warning marking, Growing pets must be CE marked. This is because such products are considered a toy. Then the manufacturer must confirm, through a CE mark, that the safety requirements in the European regulations for toys have been followed.
