Transporting and storing petrol

As a private individual, you can store a total of up to 60 litres of petrol indoors on your own property. You can transport up to 240 litres at a time. Each individual container must hold no more than 60 litres.

What you can store

You can store up to 10 litres of petrol in your home. If you have an outside storage room or garage, you can store an additional 50 litres of petrol here. This amounts to a total of 60 litres per residential unit. 

Prevent fires

According to the law, storing petrol requires you to be careful and prevent fires and other accidents. Never use fire where storing or when handling petrol. Also, make sure that it is tidy and no flammable materials such as cardboard or paper are stored where you store the petrol.

Transporting petrol

As a private individual, you can transport loads of up to 240 litres of fuel per car. Tou are only allowed to use good quality cans and containers, such as jerry cans. Individual containers may not hold more than 60 litres.

Plastic cans must be tested before petrol can be stored in them. Most plastic petrol cans on the market have labelling showing that they meet testing requirements.
