Use and storage of small gas canisters

Gas burners, primus, ski burners, spray cans and other small gas canisters should only be used outdoors. This reduces the chance of fire and explosion.

Small gas canisters contain flammable gases such as propane, butane and the like. If there is a leak, the gas will leak out and can make the air explosive.

Use outdoors

Inside an enclosed space, there can be major consequences if gas leaks out and catches fire. Therefore, the use of small gas canisters should take place outdoors.

Never store in the basement

Neither large nor small gas canisters should be stored in the basement or below ground level. The gas is heavier than air. If gas leaks out below ground level or in a place without proper ventilation, it will accumulate along the floor. Then all it takes is a small spark for the gas to catch fire and explode.

An external storage room, closet or garage above ground level can be a suitable place for storing small gas canisters.

Do not use aerosol can in heat

Aerosol cans containing gas as propellant (aerosol canisters) and aerosol cans with flammable contents should be stored in the same way as other gas canisters. Flammable aerosol cans should not be used near open flames, sparks, hot surfaces or the like.

Do not dispose of gas canisters in the residual waste

Gas canisters must be delivered as hazardous waste. Disposing of gas canisters in residual waste may result in explosion and fire during disposal. The waste collection is organized differently from municipality to municipality. Check with your relevant waste disposal company or municipality where you can deliver gas canisters.
