Provide fresh air
The risk of carbon monoxide poisoning is greatest where gas appliances are used for long periods of time where people are present. If the room is small or has poor ventilation, low carbon monoxide is needed. Therefore, always ensure good ventilation in rooms where you use gas appliances.
It is a good idea to set up a gas detector on the floor near the gas cylinder or other places where gas can leak. Also install a CO detector (carbon monoxide detector), so that you are alerted in the event of poor combustion and the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.
Follow the instructions
Please also check the operating instructions for the size of the room required by the appliance. Appliances that burn a lot of gas and oxygen, such as free-standing gas heaters without an extractor, should not be used for long periods of time. Such heaters must be kept under supervision and never placed in rooms where anyone is sleeping. Gas appliances intended for outdoor use must never be used indoors.
Maintain the appliances
Typical faults on gas appliances are that the burner is partially clogged by dust or dirt, or that parts of the appliance are worn or damaged due to damage or poor maintenance.
Remember to keep the use and maintenance information that came with the appliance and follow it. If you have appliances that are used infrequently, you should also vacuum or blow away dust before use. This is especially true for gas-powered refrigerators, where the air intake is close to the floor.
Some gas refrigerators have parts that need to be cleaned especially (e.g. the pipe over the burner/flame at the back of the refrigerator). This is very important and should be described in the instructions for use.
How to avoid the dangerous carbon monoxide:
- Ensure good ventilation where you use a gas stove and other gas appliances.
- Check that the gas appliance is for indoor use.
- Make sure that the room where you will be using the gas appliance is large enough.
- Pay attention when using gas stoves and gas stoves.
- Do not use free-standing gas stoves without an extractor for a long time.
- Follow the use and maintenance instructions supplied with the appliance.
