Avoid accidents with rubbing alcohol

Rubbing alcohol is used, among other things, to fire up camping stoves. With a few simple precautions, the risk of accidents is not so great.

Stay tuned

Rubbing alcohol is a highly flammable liquid. Improper use has led to accidents and unsightly burns. Always be present when a rubbing alcohol appliance is in use. Also make sure that the camping stove or appliance is on a flat surface so that there is no spillage.

Top up correctly

A common mistake is to refill rubbing alcohol while it is still burning. Then an explosive fire occurs. Therefore, make sure that the flame is extinguished before you refill rubbing alcohol on an appliance that is or has recently been used. Do not fill the burner more than three-quarters full.

Extinguish with the lid

The flame should be extinguished by putting on or twisting the lid. Do not try to blow out the flame – then you could blow burning liquid on people or nearby objects.

Storage

Rubbing alcohol and other flammable liquids must be stored in tight, clearly labelled packaging. You cannot store more than 10 litres in a housing unit.
