Do not dispose of batteries in residual waste

Batteries that are disposed of in residual waste can lead to fires that annually inflict major costs on society.

Batteries or equipment with built-in batteries should not be disposed of in residual waste or other sorted waste. This must be delivered in stores that sell the same type of product, regardless of brand.

Grocery stores accept the most common batteries, while electronics stores also accept electrical products.

At the nearest recycling station, you can also deliver batteries and electrical products. Ask the staff if you are in doubt about where to drop off at the recycling station.

Batteries and electrical products to be handed in for recycling

  • Built-in batteries (lithium batteries) in appliances, PCs, tablets, mobiles, electric bikes, electric scooters, toys, remote controls, flashing shoes and so on.
  • Button cell batteries.
  • Conventional and rechargeable household batteries (AA, AAA, 9 V).

How should I store used batteries at home?

If you have a sorting bin, you can use it for used batteries. You can also collect smaller batteries in a jam jar with a lid. You reduce the risk of the batteries catching fire by taping over the terminals of the batteries.

Good battery advice

  • Do not store batteries in a box or drawer where they can short-circuit each other or be shorted by other metal objects.
  • Do not subject cells or batteries to mechanical shock. Do not disassemble, open, or tear up batteries.
  • Do not use chargers other than those intended for use with the equipment. Take care of and follow the operating instructions for the equipment. Pay attention to the plus (+) and minus (-) marks on the battery.
  • Wipe the cell or battery terminals with a clean, dry cloth if they become dirty.
  • Do not leave a battery on a long-term charge when not in use.
  • If possible, remove the battery from the equipment when not in use.
  • Do not expose batteries to heat or fire. Avoid storing in direct sunlight.
